During Christmas, 17-year-old Ashley is babysitting 12-year-old Luke Lerner, who has romantic feelings for her. While they watch a horror film, Luke unsuccessfully attempts to seduce Ashley. Strange events outside make Ashley uneasy, but they turn out to be caused by Luke's best friend, Garrett, who has come to visit. When a window shatters upstairs, the trio discovers a brick with the message "Leave, and you'll die." Panicking, Garrett runs out the back door but is apparently shot and killed by an unknown assailant.
Shocked by the tragedy, Ashley and Luke flee upstairs and take refuge in the attic. Ashley narrowly avoids a serious fall, thanks to Luke's quick reflexes. They later hide in Luke's closet, where an intruder wearing a mask and armed with a shotgun enters the room. Ashley recognizes the mask as one of Luke's and demands that the intruder reveal their identity. To her surprise, the masked person is Garrett. Ashley realizes that Luke had orchestrated the scare in the hopes of seducing her and staging a rescue. Enraged, she berates Luke, calling him mentally disturbed and suggesting that he needs therapy. She tries to leave, with Luke following her. At the top of the stairs, Luke slaps Ashley, causing her to tumble and lose consciousness.
Luke then binds Ashley with duct tape and forces her to play truth or dare. Ashley's boyfriend, Ricky, arrives at the house after receiving an earlier text message from Ashley, becoming concerned when he doesn't find her. Luke attempts to incapacitate Ricky but fails. In a heated confrontation, Ricky nearly kills Luke but is threatened by Garrett, who wields the shotgun. Eventually, Luke manages to knock Ricky out, and they tie him up next to Ashley.
While Ashley uses a piece of broken glass to free herself, Luke attempts to demonstrate what happens when someone is hit in the head with a swinging paint can, inspired by a scene from the movie "Home Alone." Luke tries to replicate it with Ricky but misses on the first swing. Ashley breaks free and confronts Luke with a gun. In a panic, he releases the paint can, which strikes and kills Ricky. When Ashley realizes the gun is empty, she tries to escape to a group of carolers outside. However, Luke uses the brick thrown through the upstairs window to knock her out again before she can alert them.
Luke calls Ashley's ex-boyfriend, Jeremy, claiming that she wants him to write an apology letter. While Jeremy writes the letter, Luke hangs him from a tree, making it appear as if it's a suicide note. Garrett has a change of heart and starts to free Ashley, but Luke kills him. Luke then stabs Ashley in the neck and stages the scene to frame Jeremy. Later, he goes to bed and waits for his parents to return, prompting them to contact the police. Fortunately, Ashley survives by applying duct tape to her neck wound to control the bleeding. From his bedroom window, Luke watches as Ashley gestures at him before being wheeled into an ambulance.
